Rebuilding the Royston BC Seaside trail

# 13 blog -Walkable Trail but still under construction.

Road mulch has been added to firm up the north end of the Royston Seaside trail so this section is now very walkable.  Most of the construction happens between 7 am and 4 pm so be very cautious.

Giant Douglas fir “eagle” trees are in the woods near the Thompson Road section.  Eagles are active now building or renovating nests.

The logs anchored along the shoreline as part of this Green Shores project are now being infilled with sand before planting of shoreline grasses.

Lots of birds in the K’omoks estuary now that fall is in full swing.

Coho Salmon are jumping like crazy so the Fishermen in waders are very active near the old ships.

Large Rocks, Cables, Douglas Fir Timbers, Drills and tough Glue are all part of the construction to anchor these large logs.  This will become the understory of the beach restoration and support the foreshore of the newly rebuilt seaside trail. A Greenshores Project.

Rebuilding the Royston BC Seaside Trail

#11 photo blog – The top 6 photos are the start of the trail off Chinook Rd (unmarked). Chinook Rd is across from the farm tractor store on Hwy 19A just south of Courtenay.

This area has had the original trail reworked and a layer of road mulch added along with appropriate drainage.

The balance of the photos are in front of the homes located closer to the shore.  As this is a green shores project every attempt is being made to naturalize the shoreline.

Logs have been dug into the shoreline and anchored with large rocks. Eventually this will infill with material that washes up on the beach during storms and will provide a more natural looking shoreline.

Hilton Road sign was added last week near the highway 19A entrance to Hilton Road making it easier to identify where the trail construction is.  Hilton Rd is directly opposite Hiawatha Evergreens and is the location for Royston House Seaside Retreat VR & Bed and Breakfast.

Photo Blog # 9 – Shoreline Stabilization along the Royston Trail

An old iron spike from the Comox Logging Railway Days on the Royston Trail.

Construction this past week to stabilize the foreshore and protect the new trail from erosion.

Last Sunday’s nasty sou – easter Storm left a lot of Eel Grass along the shore of the section being worked on

Just past half way on the rough construction work with a lot of finishing work still ahead

Building the new Royston Seaside trail

#8 – Polishing  the Edges

Yesterday some of the finishing touches were done to the new trail south from Hilton to Lince Rds. New dirt along the edges and more buildup on the trail itself after the culverts were added.              Still to come a topping of road crush. By the look of the footprints after last night’s rain a number of people are exploring this new section of the Royston Seaside trail.

New Culvert installed yesterday

Right in front of Royston House is a large new culvert.  Very tastefully installed so the only visible part from the trail is rock and road mulch.  This culvert will funnel winter runoff from Royston House B&B down into the oceanside slough.

Trail continues to be worked on along the Lince Road section with drainage installation in a couple of sections.

Rebuilding the Royston Seaside trail–Sept 2013

Construction North of Royston House B&B to Thompson Rd Creek

Some of the more difficult terrain immediately north of Royston House past a couple of neighbors.  The trail connected to the Thompson Rd creek where a huge culvert was put in to handle runoff along Haas Rd, and off the Island Hwy 19a eventually feeding down Thompson Rd.

The old bridge at the Foreshore that was put in some time ago by local residents has been removed to be replaced by the huge culvert.

This completes the groundwork for the Trail from Hilton Rd to the Thompson Rd Interconnect.  Next the section to Chinook across from the Toyota Tractor dealer.
